Project title: Conservation of buildings listed in the register of monuments - the Synagogue and the Talmudic House in Tykocin
Beneficiary: Muzeum Podlaskie w Białymstoku
Project value: PLN 2,789,109.53
EU grant: PLN 1,355,827.04

The synagogue and the Talmudic House in Tykocin gained a new image thanks to the revitalization from the grant under the Regional Operational Programme.

As a part of a two-year investment, which is worth nearly PLN 3 million, a renovation was carried out. The works were completed in December 2018. Then, new solutions to present exhibitions were also introduced. The facilities have been equipped with media elements used for presenting the cultural offer.

The building was meticulously restored and saved from destruction in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it required a second revitalization, involving large financial and organizational effort - emphasized Andrzej Lechowski, the director of the Podlaskie Museum in Białystok. - During the renovation, all window and door carpentry was replaced, and new roof coverings were laid. There is also a new heating installation in the buildings, the new foundations of the synagogue were re-insulated.

The Great Synagoge seen from the outside

The color of the Talmudic House followed the concept of conservators, which was born after the destruction of the building during the Second World War. In the Great Synagogue, the colors are based on materials found as a result of the laboratory work.

In 2013, we took samples of external plasters from the Great Synagogue. Then they were examined in the monument conservation workshop in Toruń in order to determine the oldest pigments found in the plaster mass. These pigments have been marked with the appropriate colors. The color of the Great Synagogue is not our fantasy, but a return to the oldest reference – informed the director of the Podlaskie Museum.

Although the renovation did not facilitate guest service, it did not affect the drop in attendance.

The development plan for the Museum in Tykocin is to enrich the offer of the buildings with further visual measures. This includes, among others, mapping exhibitions or steam screens.
