Beneficiary: Miasto Suwałki
Project value: PLN 13,252,217.97
EU grant: PLN 5,445,398.88
The building of city bath was built in the 1930s, but it only survived until the 1970s. Later, the historic building began to fall into ruin. For decades, the area around was unused, forgotten, covered with thickets and bushes.
Thanks to the project and the European funds the area has a completely new look. The project was divided into two parts. The first one was to revitalise the building of the city bath for public use. The second one aimed at revitalising and rebuilding a part of area next to the bath, and creating attractive boulevard along the Czarna Hańcza river.
The building of Stara Łaźnia was practically build from scratch. Only three historic walls were preserved. Thanks to rebuilding the facility is now almost twice as large as originally. It serves the public function, offering exhibition area as well as sport and cultural space. There is also a place for a gastronomic point and a sports equipment rental. As part of the second task, riverside areas were developed and boulevards over the Czarna Hańcza river were created. Sidewalks, bicycle paths, numerous green plantings (lawns, flower meadows) with elements of small architecture were made, as well as lighting with illumination and power lines. The works also concerned the adjustment of the bank of the Czarna Hańcza river along with the strengthening of the base of the slopes. It included the construction of a recreational quay, a slip for canoes and a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. The new facility has become a place for meetings with culture, outdoor concerts, environmental and educational events, as well as recreational and sports competitions.
